Root canals

The root canal treatment is a procedure that removes the infected and inflamed pulp inside the tooth, cleans, disinfects and shapes the root canals, and places a filling to seal the space.

This could happen due to:

  • A tooth abscess
  • Needing a crown
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Facial/mouth/tooth trauma
  • Cracked tooth and/or filling

Often a patient will notice tooth pain, extreme temperature sensitivity in the tooth, swelling and soreness, and even discoloration in an infected tooth.

How To Know When You Need A Root Canal?

The most common symptom is an intense toothache. When the tooth pulp is inflamed or infected it causes severe pain, especially because it is close to the tooth itself.

There’s when the root canal comes in to save a severely infected tooth from needing extraction. It’s usually the last chance to prevent a tooth removal.

But if the tooth is too infected, extraction will be required instead. On the other hand if there’s no infection inside the tooth, the dental issues can be fixed with other treatments.

Root Canals FAQ

Root canals require a few steps.

The first step implicates a small perforation in the top of the tooth so the endodontist can insert special instruments to cut and remove all of the infected pulp.

The second step is to fill the empty space with a rubber-like substance to avoid that the infection comes back and protect the integrity of the tooth.

Finally your endodontist will put you a dental crown or inlay over the hole to cover it and keep the tooth safe.

People fear the root canal treatment because of the pain, without realizing that they suffer of more pain if the problem is left untreated.

Actually, root canals are made for stop pain caused by inflammation and infection. The endodontist will administer you local anesthetic and therefore you won’t feel any pain.

There is soreness and discomfort after when the procedure is done; it can last a couple days but this can be easily handled with prescription medication.

Usually endodontically treated teeth can last as long as other natural teeth, but that depends of the oral hygiene of patient, otherwise a deficient oral hygiene will rise the possibility of the infection came back and the tooth will need to be removed.
